Richard Hamilton dies: British artist Richard Hamilton dies. Richard Hamilton, a British artist sometimes referred to as the “father of pop art” has died. He was 89. The artist died Tuesday at an undisclosed location in Britain, according to London’s Gagosian Gallery, which represents him and was working on a retrospective of his work.
Hamilton's best known work was his 1956 collage featuring a body builder holding a lollipop and a tin of ham and titled Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?. He is also credited with coining the term "pop art” in a 1957 description of a show he participated in.
