Hugs promote higher levels of oxytocin- Oxytocin hormone promotes nurturing and bonding: Hugs promote higher levels of Oxytocin, but what exactly is it and what does it do? Dr. Gerald Cohen at The Center For The Healing Process, explains the process by which Oxytocin can help improve the attachment between two people, that’s why it’s called the “bonding hormone”. Oxytocin also lowers cortisol levels, and leads to a reduction in stress level. He outlines how higher levels of Oxytocin cannot be triggered in a sexual setting however, at which point other hormones are released. This is why platonic hugs can better promote the release of Oxytocin, but the two are not mutually exclusive as hugs can also be intimate.
