Fox Takes Heat For Slang, Fake Obama

Tuesday, 14 June 2011

A host on the Fox Business network—criticized last month for suggesting President Obama was "chugging 40's" during his trip to Europe—is facing allegations of racism after referring to the White House as the "Hizzouse," "Hizzy" and "The Big Crib," and guests of the administration as "hoods."

Eric Bolling, who hosts Fox Business' "Follow the Money," criticized Obama for inviting Gabon's president Ali Bongo at the White House this week, a month after the Fox News-fueled controversy over Common's invitation to perform at First Lady Michelle Obama's poetry event. Bolling's broadcast late last week came on the heels of another racially tinged controversy, courtesy of Bolling's Fox Business colleague John Stossel, who drew flak for bringing an Obama impersonator on air to stage a mock debate with a 2012 GOP presidential hopeful.

"So what's with all the hoods in the Hizzy?" Bolling asked on his show on Friday. "A month after the White House hosted the rapper Common, who glorifies violence on cops, the president opened his doors to one of Africa's most evil dictators."Bolling then discussed Bongo's invitation with Human Events editor Jason Matter, Fox Business reporter Sandra Smith (whom Bolling browbeat into calling the White House "the Hizzy") and Columbia University professor Marc Lamont Hill.

"When confronted with images of President Obama meeting with Gabon's president, Ali Bongo," the Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg wrote, "[Bolling] instantly recalls other black people who have met with President Obama, and comes to the conclusion that Obama feels deep love for black 'hoodlums.'"

A spokeswoman for Fox Business told The Cutline that Bolling would address the issue on his show tonight. Bolling did not immediately respond to a message on Twitter.

"Bolling, and his Fox supervisors, may not be aware of this, but there are many independent nations in Africa," Goldberg added, "and the United States has diplomatic relations with nearly all of them."

"The Bongo family has extorted billions in oil money from his nation … meanwhile 1/3 of Gabon lives on $2 per day," Bolling wrote on Twitter. "And I'm a racist!"

Earlier in the show, Bolling teased the segment, referring to the White House as "The Hizzouse" and noting, "It's not the first time he's had a hood in The Big Crib."

It's also not the first time Bolling has referenced black stereotypes in his criticism of Obama. Last month, Bolling wrote on Facebook and Twitter that the president, then on a tour of Europe, was "chugging 40's in IRE while tornadoes ravage MO," repeating the line about malt liquor on-air. (Bolling responded to charges of racism in that instance on Twitter. "I drank 40's growing up in Chicago," he wrote. "I am NOT racist.")

The Fox Business network attracted additional racial controversy last week, when the Fox Business host John Stossel staged a mock debate in which Obama impersonator Reggie Brown pretended to debate former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, a candidate for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.
